Because I'm such a nice guy, allow me to enlighten you a bit more as to the correct spelling of the numerous words you have mangled in this thread:
We'll do it like this - your mispell - correct spelling differance - difference theoreticly - theoretically intiresting - interesting illitirate - illiterate dispise - despise adolecent - adolescent psychadelic - psychedelic medievil - medieval reddiculous - ridiculous OK, study up Padawan. One day you may find yourself despising something other than yourself. |

Wow, wasn't really trying to turn this into a flamewar, i just wanted to know if there was a way to change names without starting over. The name I have goes back to the January BWE when I wasn't even sure if I was going to buy the game. I was gonna change my name to something very plain like John Doe just to keep people from getting upset. I do not, however, buy into the argument that you have to have some kind of nonsensical role playing name in order to be accepted in the community.
This is actually my first RPG, I came from exclusivley playing first person shooters and I was looking for a game that was toally different and more relaxing. I was also hoping for a better community of players as FPS communities tend to be egotistical and very self centered. Thanks to those of you who have pointed things out that are helpful. |

They won't delete your character over a name since there is no naming policy. Worst case they'll change it to something lame without telling you.
Naming policies are bs and lead to more headache in policing them as whining and name griefing grows exponentially when it gets recognition from the developer. I've seen some offensive names and you know what I did? I faced the other direction and the problem went away! My two-step program for dealing with offensive names is free. Click the pulldown district-menu at the upper-left corner, double click a new district. Viola, it's like magic! No, really, I won't charge you a thing for this pearl of wisdom. |

I saw a black Mesmer girl the other day named "Ghetto Booty". I laughed for about a half-hour. I also saw "Bill Lumberg" and I just had to message him and ask if I had to work Saturday LOL.

Erod, I totally agree with you, but is using the "S" word and other offensive words truly going to prove anything... probably not. Ease up on the cursing.

I believe Erod is displaying the example of what most consider a RPG exile of society (meaning this game is his real life). Why get so angry over what one's name is in a video game? If it makes the person playing with it happy the fine. If you don't like it, then don't group with them. I know my name would never be found in an RPG, but that doesn't mean that Erod is higher and mighter than me because he thought of 6 different characters that could be classified as RPG names.

Erod, take a pill. Actually, take ten. You want to dive right into the RPG side of the game? Fine. Go with it. Make costumes for yourself to wear when you play. Dress your dog up like a Charr. Do whatever you want. It's your time, spend it how you want. But don't go forcing your own desires on others. If someone doesn't feel like being all that intense about the RPG aspects of the game, so be it. Let them be Tig Bitty or BigButt Bootylicious or whatever if they want to because it is their right to do so. Amazingly enough, the world is not going to conform to your vision of how it should be so just deal with it and move on.

Yikes
Someone who take himself (or herself, but I doubt it), WAYYYYYYYYY too seriously. Erod, just ignore what bugs you and you'll live longer.

I get offended by people who are easily offended by names. People take it way too seriously. I picture them changing channels right away when the pre-show warning message comes on lol. ???Warning, this program contains scenes of violence, vulgar dialogue and upsetting name calling???

I guess it may simply be a black and white situation for most of you, but I however can see both sides of the situation. The fact of the matter is, everyone here payed for the game (I hope), and whether it is implied or not on the box, everyone wants to have fun. Those people who like to run around with the name..."tigolbitties" are, in some sense, having fun (perhaps at the expense of people who are easily offended), and those people who are easily offended would like to have fun by having all the afformentioned people removed from their immediate online existence.
The truth is that it's an online game and is billed and advertised as such. I'm not making excuses for ArenaNet, NCsoft, or anyone, but when playing an online game, you are going to be interacting with other people. That means, just as in RealLife(tm), there are going to be conflicts about pretty much everything. So do what you do in real life. Don't play with those people. Don't talk to them, don't respond to them, CERTAINLY don't group with them, and leave the district. If you are too proud to do this ('But that means they've won!') then perhaps it's time to do some introspection and possible psychological evaluation to determine why you are so stuborn that everyone must play the way you do. Because of the nigh-ingenious way that Guild Wars is set up, it is very, very difficult for someone to harrass you while you are actually playing. Perhaps the lesson here is that everyone needs to learn a little bit of tolernence - REGARDLESS of what side of the fence you are on. As a side note, it should be mentioned that stress kills. People with low tolerence for social interaction with people whose ideals differ from their own are shown to have much higher incidences of heart disease and cancer. Be intolerent at your own risk. |

Its like those Christians that want to put an end to all pornography.
If you don't like it, don't view it; go elsewhere "Oh, but that offensive name/material conflicts with my rights!" No, it doesn't. But imposing your beliefs in censorship most certainly does |
